Residents Race To Stack Sandbags Amid Flood Threats
OTTAWA, Ohio -- Residents in the small northwest Ohio village of Ottawa have been racing to stack sandbags amid the third major flood in less than two years.
The National Weather Service indicates the Blanchard River is now receding after topping out overnight at nearly 6 feet above its flood level. Water has crept into the downtown business district, and schools are closed today.
The worst may not be over. Forecasters are cautioning of the potential for 1 to 2 inches of rain across the region through tonight and the threat of more flooding in Ottawa and other low-lying areas across northwest Ohio's flat farmlands.
Authorities declared a Level 3 road advisory for Putnam County on Monday, meaning anyone driving on water-covered roads could be arrested.
