View Full Version : trying to save some money

So I decided today that since the man is going to be gone for the next 8-10 months I'm going off my birth control. I just cant see paying $40 a month for it when I am not going to need it.
I figure I'll save that money and then a month before he is due home I'll go back on it.
Also I am going to severely limit the amount that I go out to the bars. I want to be able to save up money so that when Tom comes home I can go to NC to meet him. And we can finally get our tattoos that we have been talking about for almost a year now.
I'm trying to think of other ways I can save money. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

I did the same thing with my birth control! Once J left I got off..that was an extra $50 a month for me! That crap is too expensive. As for the bar situation, have other people buy you drinks..lol that's what I do! i dont flirt or anything..they just give them to me and if they try to talk to me im like "sorry i have a boyfriend" then take my drink..haha im mean. Do you have a savings account? If not to go www.ingdirect.com and make one. They automatically take hoeever much you want out of your bank account. you can cancel it at anytime if you dont want them to take the money out and you can transfer the money. I know most banks have something like that but I like ING better.
And if any of you ladies are gonna make one, let me know and I'll send you a link. I get $10 if I refer someone :) THanks!

If you drink coffee, make it at home instead of buying it out. You'd be surprised how much that saves you.
If you have small trash cans - plastic bags from walmart work just as good as mini trash bags lol not a huge money saver...but it makes me feel better!

Don't get coffee's while you're out. It takes all of 5 min, and is oooo so much cheaper to make them yourself at home. Make your menu for the month, and then make your grocery list from the menu. You will save tons getting only what you need while shopping.

use coupons, take out a specific amount of cash per week and only use that instead of a debit card.

I've already cut my utilities down to just electric and heat. I don't eat out unless I'm with Tom. I don't go to Dunkins everyday anymore. Pretty much the only thing I spend money on thats a waste is smokes. But with the stress level rising I'd be insane to try and quit now.
I'm just not sure where else I can cut back. When I move into the new place that will save me a ton on electric and heat. Plus my rent will go from 650 to 350 a month. It's subsidized housing.
I think I will look into a separate account though. One that I actually have to go to the bank to get money out of it. Maybe that way I'll learn to be better about saving money.

My best advice is to write out a budget. You can actually see where your money is coming from and going to. Make sure to save reciepts if you use debit and cross off what you spend at the end of each day. Good luck with it!

I spend way too much on cigarettes..they are crazy expensive! Especially when I go out to bars..when I start drinking I turn into a damn chain smoker.lol
I didn't really read everyone elses responses lol but you should go back on the pill 3 months before he gets home if you really don't want to be preggers because it takes that long to actually start working (swear! thats what my girly-doctor told me!) but I did the same thing and went off when D left.. and then I remembered why I got on it in the first place when my cramps got so bad I was like crying at work!

My doc said that with the patch you're good after 3 weeks. But we want to have a baby anyway so if I DO happen to get pregnant it's not a huge deal. I can't wait to have a lil nugget to cuddle again!

the patch is the only thing I can use that doesnt cause major side effects for me. and with my health issues an IUD is out of the question. I dunno it's expensive but it was the only thing I could use. Tom and I talked about it and decided that I should just go off it while he's gone. Fine by me. :)
Hmmm money saving tips. The best tip I've used is doing grocery shopping less often, and writing a list and sticking to it. I try to do our shopping every other week. Instead of spending $100 a week, I can squeeze $150 into 2 weeks...that's $100 right there easily.
Also, when doing laundry wash on the cold cycle. You'll save a decent amount on electric by not paying to heat the water. And if possible, lay your clothes out to dry. I'll admit, I don't do that. I'll pay to run my dryer, it's worth it lol.

Yikes!!! That is insane!!
One thing that I did was on the day we got paid (or the day after) was to figure out how much I needed per pay period to live on and separated the cash into envelopes. I stored it in the freezer (ya know-cold hard cash!).

That's crazy Sabrina! They said that is a possiblity that your body could expel it. But lucky for me, I didn't have that issue.
And Samme, yeah, cold hard cash is always good!
