Why is it time?

We never transitioned really...just kind of happened. but if I'm worried about spills lil M still gets a sippy...

Yeah we too never really "transitioned". Donovan is 5 and often gets a sippy cup and Gabe get one 99.9% of the time since he in uncoordinated. The red stains on my carpet would say otherwise..lol!! They both drank from cups/straws pretty early.

Has he ever drank from a cup or straw? If he does occasionally he should be fine if your worried about him being too dependent on the sippy.

I knew a girl who drank from a bottle still at 4 and hard a very hard time drinking through a straw. My husband's niece is 8 and still uses a sippy occasionally. I don't think there is any wrong or right when it comes to sippy cups.

I think that if you're ready to transition Riley to a regular cup then go for it. It's like teaching them to do anything else. If you don't want juice stains on your carpet he has to have the sippy cup in the living room.W when you're eating, sit him at the kitchen table (which is hopefully not on carpet) and give him an big boy cup. Let him start getting to used to using a real cup in areas where it's not going to ruin your couch or carpet you know? Kids are gunna spill until they get the coordination to handle a real cup and they only way they're going to do that is practice. Just like anything else :)

I think if you think it's time to get rid of the cup then go for it :)

Colton uses a big cup sometimes... We just 'train' him to leave it at the kitchen table. Otherwise, if we are out and about he gets a sippy cup. One thing we did that we LOVE is got a camelbak waterbottle with a spout... That is what we keep water in and on the kids table... any other cup of juice, milk or otherwise stays on the kitchen table and is usually with a meal. Colton was using a reg cup at 3... K is still on the sippy

Regina,
keep in mind it is hard for little hands to manipulate a cup, and don't be upset if he spills.. we didn't "fill" the cup, just put it like 1/3 of the way full at first till they were use to it... and if it spilled we told them "it's ok, accidents happen" becuase they were really more upset then we were.. we did what the others did, at home we used big kid cups, left at the table, (at our house drinks stay at the table anyway) and if we were out to eat they had a kids cup with a lid and straw. Adrian is 7 and Alex is 5 and we still have nights that we are picking up spilled drinks but I'm not going to lie, I'm almost 26 and still spill my drink too LMAO

I don't think there is any set age you HAVE to do it... when he is ready... when you are ready... go for it!

im already working on food and drinks only in the kitchen or at the table (cause the carpet under it is already ruined) I would like to do it now cause he hate spilling on him self and im thinking that if he gets it over the summer then it wont matter as much cause it will be hot and his shirt will be ok a little wet.

honestly it would just be easier if he could drink from a normal cup. i dont always remember to take a sippy when i leave the house, and not all my friends have little kids and none of my family has sippy cups. rylie loves to copy scott so im hoping that will help. another thing im thinking is to do it the way i got rid of bottles. just put all the lids to the cups away so he cant find them.
