Hi all,
Quick question...my hubby is talking about being able to train for border watch after AIT and do that in Texas afterward. Does anyone know anything about this? He said we wouldn't be on a base, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what area we would be in or if there is one specific area? And any other info on the program would be helpful because I know nothing about it. Thanks!!

um... not on a base??? I was about to say fort bliss! lol seriously there is one exit to an entrance to bliss off one of the interstates, if you miss the exit to base, the next exit goes straight to MEXICO!!! lol so i honestly have no idea. Bliss is the first thing that popped into my head cause Juarez mexico is literally 2 minutes from base... so i have no idea!

Haha! Thanks for the info though Kristi! That might come in handy!! I guess he would basically be reserve, like civilain life, military job, but he really wants to protect our homeland (and his MOS won't really call for that unless it's an extreme case) and he feels like that job suits him best, so I'm happy he found something that he's passionate about. He gets his basic date Thursday...I thought he was signing his papers today, but I didn't realize that he does all that when he goes to MEPS which will be Thursday. I'll let you all know what we find out...
I don't know anything about it, but my guess is that he would basically be stationed in a city/town...area somewhere along the border. I'm assuming you'd be able to live with him and you would get BAH based on where he is stationed. There are reserve bases and units all over. If he would basically be reserve...he'd probably be stationed at a reserve base. I don't know, like I said I don't know anything about it!

So, I guess this program is pretty much brand new. We're putting military on the border now, instead of just police...I'm guessing it's because this health care bill got passed and includes illegal immigrants. From what I have been told, he should be able to go straight to training (2 weeks long) from AIT, and then we'd go to Texas and live off base with BAH, and active status. If he needs a waiver though, he would have to wait until after AIT to sign up...and he might not have time to do that if his unit gets deployed within a couple of weeks after AIT. He had to change his MOS to truck driver (construction wasn't available here), so his chances of being deployed straight out of AIT have really increased (according to his family in military). My cousin's husband is in Iraq right now doing the same thing and she's a nervous wreck and pregnant, so she can't take her anxiety meds. =[ So, keep them in your prayers, please.
I will let you all know more when I know something.
I do not know anything about that program so no help there. I just wanted to say that getting deployed straight out of AIT doesn't always happen. MY DH has a support MOS and could have went anywhere we got assigned to Ft Campbell and they had just come back so we knew then he wasn't going anywhere for a little while. I'm not saying this always happens but you never know so think positive.

I don't know alot but they have been placing National Guardsmen from California at the border for a few years. Some soldiers from my husbands company have been assigned to this and basically they are given housing usually an apartment near the border. Some of them have their spouse's live with them others don't. But I think that's by choice because some of the spouse's have already established homes in towns not too far away. Also some of these positions are in the middle of no where. You can be placed anywhere along the border not just Texas but Texas has the longest border with Mexico I think so its more likely.
I didn't know they were sending Active Army to the border or is he signing up with National Guard? If its National Guard I can probably find out a little more info.
