Matt went to talk to his First Sargeant this morning about where we wanted to go after Alaska. Unfortuantly there are no more aviation units in Italy so our #1 choice is out. Our second choice is either going to be Germany or Fort Carson, CO. Well when they were talking First Sgt. told Matt all these wonderful things about Germany and how if we decide to go there he will help us out by putting us with either a VIP unit or an AVIM unit... either way, they're both GOOD. He also said the he would help us find a nice place off base since on base housing over there isn't that great. AND he said that he would get everything ready for us so that way I can move with him right away rather than having to wait a month or two like a lot of couples have to do.

So I havn't actually talked to matt today b/c the phone was missing and AOL wouldn't load for him (he sent this info in a myspace message lol) but he's supposed to be getting on in a few hours so we can discuss what we want to do.

I've heard Fort Carson is beautiful as well and since we're going to try to have a baby in about a year or two being in the states might not be a bad idea.

This is a lot to take in right now but we've almost made a decision! :)

Well I just talked to Matt for a whole 5 minutes on the computer lol
Better than nothing though right?!

I know he really wants Germany and he's reenlisting for 6 more years so....
He's going today to make it final!
Wish us luck!
I know Germany will make him really happy if we get it so I'm okay with that.
As long as we're together and he's happy, I'm happy :)

I'll keep everyone updated!

That sounds exciting Mary! :) You'll have to take pictures by the truck load while you're there. It'll definitely be a neat experience and something you will enjoy!

Mary,

We were stationed in Germany for 3 years, and our son was born over there. It is absolutely beautiful. We were in on base/post housing. There are some good and some not so good. It is military housing so of course it depends on what you are looking for and what is available. Our house was really nice, comparatively. I will tell you that there really aren't any houses there. They are mostly apartments. In fact, I never saw a house that didn't have an entire generation of a family living in it. There was a house right by where we lived that had 5 generations living under the same roof. Amazing! The apartments on the economy are extremely small, but if it is the two of you just starting out it shouldn't be too bad.
I don't know about you, but I am a junk collector LOL. The Germans are charged taxes on the furniture they own, so a lot of times you can find some great furniture that is practically brand new that is sitting outside. It is cheaper for them to buy new stuff than it is to pay taxes on it, so they just get rid of it. When we came back from there we had enough furniture to fill a two story house. (We were also just married and had nothing when we got there.)
There are so many things to see over there. Just please promise you will get some traveling done while you are there. That is the one thing I regret is that we didn't travel as much. Good Luck!!!

wow! Well i really hope you get Germany as well, it sounds like it would be a great experience!! Would you have to be stationed there for the full 6 yrs or could you come back tot he states in a few? What would you do over there?

I think it will be great for you both, and you can visit Italy while you are there so you get the best of both worlds!! :)

We would be stationed there for 2 years and then we'd come back to the states for our last 2 years.
They sent the paperwork back to Alaska this morning so we're just waiting to see if we got it :)

Ohhh thats exciting! Going to Germany would be fun... and i agree, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Dan is/was stationed in Germany, although he didn't like it, but only because he was shipped there at 18 and didn't know anyone or anything, and it was a real culture shock.
But as long as you have each other!

You will enjoy it! Like I said though, get out of the house and see your surroundings. It will be a great experience!
