So Charlie leaves for boot camp right after the baby is born. When he leaves will the baby be covered by his health insurance? Or will she not be covered until after he completes boot camp?

When he gets to the base they go through a long process of filling out papers and such (Inprocessing)...takes like a week. He will fill out the forms for her there. Since you wont be on the insurance, she will have to get a military ID. Once you get the ID for her you can use Tricare standard. Or you can enroll her in prime. You'll just have to fill out the paperwork and take it to the closest tricare service center.

She will be covered from the day he leaves under Tricare Standard, you may even use it without the ID just let the doctors know you have Tricare Standard and they will ask who your sponsor is and what his SSN is, as long as she is on DEERS then your allset. I'm not sure how long it will take to get her birth certificate but make sure he takes it with him. I had to go to the doctors with Gabe before I got my ID and I was fine. It will take a little while before you get your DEERS paperwork to get her ID.

Standard you pay a percentage of the bill but you may use any doctor you want that accepts Tricare. Now you may enroll in Prime which is completely free and works like an HMO plan, so you have to get a PCM ( primary care manager ) and get referalls and such for specialists. That works by going to the Tricare office. They will give you a form to fill out and you pick a PCM. Then they submit it for you and your all set. How Prime works is if you enroll before the 20th of the month you start coverage on the 1st. After the 20th you start the following 1st. So if you enroll September 15th you will be on Prime on October 1st, if you enroll on Septmeber 21st you are on Prime on November 1st.

HTH!

Thanks Kira! I'm still on Tricare through my ex so I know the basics just wasn't sure with him going in. His recruiter told us she'd be covered but I don't trust recruiters lol
