View Full Version : Best form of communication
We're just starting to be able to get communication set up, so I was wondering what everyone else used and what the best form of communication is (when they're deployed)

Umm it depended where Mike was...when he was at his FOB it was Yahoo IM and when he was at his out post the only thing he had was a cell phone...which of course he needed to be on the roof of a building to use. hehe. I think it also depends on the couple. I know a lot of people use email but that never really seemed to fit for Mike and me.

well erin i can tell you right now. JM has CRAP in iraq.
The satellite phones only work if he calls the company his calling card is through and has them connect him to me, and they have 1 tent with internet, so he only gets 15min at a time on it cause normally ppl are waiting. Plus he only gets mail drops once a month...
Right now I have been surviving on the random phone and MSN messages i get

Curt and I talk via yahoo messenger. We use the pc to pc method and use our webcams. We've been doing that the whole time he's been gone. It's nice cause it's totally free!

im with kathryn. we dont get messengers. scott and i talk through email. and phone. on ship it cost like $20 for 45 min, cause he has to use a calling card to go through a opperartor and stuff. and when hes on a base its free. so he calls alot when hes at places like that.

Twitter is our #1. If they only have a minute they can at least Tweet so we know they are OK and what they are doing at that moment. MSN chat because you can webcam through it for free! Next is Vonage. It is only $25.00 for worldwide calls. Emails in between all that.
Nick and I usually do whatever is working. We go back and forth between yahoo and msn - mostly yahoo. The phone calls aren't perfect, but the cam at least shows a human being, which is nice to be able to see. I get phone calls - but he's at a really big base, so I know I'm lucky.

Bryan and I used AIM voice chat cause we could never seem to get Yahoo to work, but this was a while back and Yahoo might be better now. I usually got a phone call like everyday during the second part because he was moved to the CSM's office...just depends on where they are at as to what works best
